Itchy Penis and Psoriasis – Tips for Smoother, Healthier Skin

Psoriasis is a common skin condition, and millions of men, women and children may experience uncomfortable and bothersome symptoms such as redness, itching and scaly, flaky skin. In men, this unpleasant skin disorder may add insult to injury when it leads to a red, itchy penis. Fortunately, with the right approach to skin and penis care, men can often control their symptoms and enjoy a healthy, satisfying sex life.

What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition in which the skin cells reproduce abnormally, causing rapid growth. It is not known precisely what causes the disease, but it appears to be an autoimmune disorder. In people with psoriasis, healthy skin cells are produced too quickly, causing them to move to the outer layers before the dead skin cells can be sloughed off.

This results in scaly, silvery patches of skin and dry, flaky areas. The affected areas can become red and inflamed, and moderate to severe itching may occur. The skin may become dry and cracked, and it may sometimes bleed.

Psoriasis can affect all parts of the body, including the scalp and nails. In men, the penis may also be affected. Although the silvery, scaly patches might not appear on the penile skin, men may develop red spots and itching. Penile symptoms are not only uncomfortable, but they are also similar to those of certain sexually transmitted diseases; therefore, they can cause considerable embarrassment.

 Managing the symptoms

While there is no cure at present for psoriasis on any part of the body, there are treatments available for managing the symptoms. Most of these are aimed at slowing the growth of skin cells. Some of the most common and effective treatments for psoriasis include:

  • Topical corticosteroid creams – These work to suppress the immune system and slow the turnover of skin cells. They work best for mild to moderate cases and also help to control the associated itching. Because corticosteroid creams can cause the skin to become thinner and more brittle, as well as resistant to treatment, they are recommended for short-term use only.
  • Vitamin D – Synthetic vitamin D creams may help to normalize skin cell growth and are available as prescription creams. As with corticosteroids, they are best for short-term use, as they can cause irritation of the skin.
  • Topical retinoids – Vitamin A derivatives are believed to normalize DNA activity in the skin and slow the growth of plaques; they are also believed to reduce inflammation.
  • Light therapy – Limited exposure to sunlight or to low-dose UV rays may also help to slow the overgrowth of skin cells; light therapy must be carefully managed in order to prevent overexposure, which can lead to further skin damage.
  • Moisturizers – Moisturizing lotions will not cure psoriasis, but they can provide effective relief for roughened, scaly skin, as well as for the dryness and irritation caused by other types of psoriasis treatment.

Special considerations for men

When it comes to treating psoriasis on the male genitalia, things can become a little more complicated. The creams and ointments that help control symptoms on other parts of the body are not always appropriate for use on the more sensitive penile skin, so men need to work closely with their doctors to come up with an effective solution.

A physician’s guidelines for treatment should always be followed, and men who want to augment their treatment with additional self-care should check with their doctors first; some home remedies for psoriasis may not be recommended for use with other medications. However, many men can benefit from the use of a top-quality penis health crème (health professionals recommend Man1 Man Oil) that is formulated with natural emollients such as Shea butter – a plant-based moisturizer that is widely touted for its soothing and healing properties. Men should also look for a product containing vitamins A and E, which are often recommended for treating psoriasis flare-ups on other parts of the body. With the right approach to care, men are often able to minimize their uncomfortable (not to mention unsightly) symptoms and enjoy a healthy, satisfying sex life.
